HDR Vs. UHD

Before we jump into the differences between HDR Vs. UHD TV, let’s first understand what do we mean by HDR TV and UHD TV?

What is HDR TV?

High dynamic range (HDR) refers to the contrasts between the blacks and whites within an image. The higher the dynamic range, the closer is the photographic vision with respect to real life. HDR delivers a higher contrast range allowing for much finer detail in the shades in between. So if you have brighter white levels or dark levels, with HDR on there should be no ‘blooming’, or bleeding of colors and you can experience a splendid real viewing experience.

What is UHD TV?

UHD or Ultra High Definition TV often referred to as 4K indicates the horizontal screen resolution of about 4,000 pixels. With a pixel count of 3,840 x 2,160, the term ‘4K’ emphasizes the fact that UHD has four times the number of pixels than a standard 1080p Full HD TV.

Pixels are colored dots that make up the images we see on screen. The higher the pixel count, the better the clarity and crispness of the images and hence the resolution.

HDR Vs. UHD TV

Although there is not much difference between the two standards, the way each technology does it is very different. Between HDR Vs. UHD, 4K simply is the number of pixels that fit on a television screen or display, which enhances image definition and texture. HDR has nothing to do with resolution but deals with the color depth and quality of your image. HDR makes the pixels look the best.

The number of pixels that fit on a television screen or display differs with the size of the screen. In other words, the bigger the screen, the size and space between the pixels increase to achieve the same resolution. But the number of pixels, 4K remains the same, regardless of the screen size.

HDR Vs. UHD, Which is better?

HDR TV’s are also available in 4K TVs. To compromise on the negatives and provide the user with superior image quality, TV makers today invest more in 4K HDR TV which provides the benefits of both high resolution and standard high definition image quality, enhancing the viewing experience. HDR televisions improve color reproduction, whereas 4K provides an added definition. The two technologies complement each other providing an excellent clear and HD viewing experience.

But which is better for teeny tiny text, such as one sees in a Zoom computer science course? Color isn't important, just resolution.
